True Friendship Goes Deep

What does friendship mean to you?  What would you do for a friend?  I would like to tell you a story about friendship.  Our last home visit was with two women, Sarah and Miriam.    The sitting room was the largest we had visited all day.  Jane my new American friend and I sat and waited, as Ann, a social worker spoke to the woman in Kiswahili.  Ann explained to us that she had been counseling them, since they were coming to be tested, to see if they were HIV positive.  Sarah had been encouraging her friend for sometime, so they could be tested together.  Then they could support each other as they received their results.  I could only imagine what it was like to be tested, but what a blessing to do it with a friend.  The two women briefly left the room.  While they were out of the room, Ann explained to us that Sarah was actually a client of The Holy Family Center, a ministry of Tree of Lives.  Sarah had learned she was positive in 2013, but her friend Miriam, did not know her status.  She was concerned that her friend might also be positive and tricked her into being tested.  Miriam  came in to be tested first.  Her finger was pricked; her blood was collected and deposited in the test kit.  A small amount of liquid was added, and then we sat and waited to see if there would be one line or two.  I prayed for these women.  We waited.  Miriam saw the line on the test kit.  There was only one.  She was negative.  You could see the concern on her face change to relief and deep joy.  She went bounding out of the room, to tell her friend.  Sarah came back into the room.  Ann did not need to test Sarah again, as she knew she was positive.  While we pretended to wait for Sarah’s results, we could hear Miriam singing and dancing in the courtyard outside the room.  Her voice was sweet and light and heaven bound.  Sarah joined her friend Miriam rejoicing together that they were both negative.  Sarah’s heart was filled with joy knowing her friend was negative and walked alone once again with her secret.  We had been asked during devotions the previous evening to watch for Jesus.  I clearly saw the love of Christ in Sarah.  Find a friend and share the love of Christ with them.  It is a beautiful thing.

Exodus 15: 20-21 Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine, and all the women followed her with tambourines, dancing. Miriam led them in singing,

Sing to God—

what a victory!

He pitched horse and rider

into the sea!
